Tours, France, capital of Touraine in the heart of the Loire Valley chateau and wine region (see also http://www.tours.fr/index.php4 ) is 30 km (half an hour's drive (less when the new autoroute is open this year) and an interesting mediaeval town, part of which was unfortunately destroyed during the war.

The old town, Vieux Tours, has been restored and now forms the bustling heart to the centre with many cafés and restaurants, boutiques and small craft shops, and is frequented by students and visitors alike. Visit Place Plumereau and sit in the table filled square sipping a wine and drinking in the atmosphere! Today there are many interesting museums, galleries and of course the gothic Cathedral of Saint Gatien to visit.
Tours was founded in Gallo-Roman times, people flocked to visit the tomb of St. Martin, and it has remained successful for many centuries. The site of the Cathedral, Musée des Beaux Arts and the original Roman Amphitheatre forms the original 3rd century town, which was surrounded by a wall, parts of which are still visible.
