Henri
III was the son of Catherine de Medicis and
Henri II and ruled over a
France divided by religious wars from 1574.
This was a period of suppression of protestants, led by Saint
Bartholémey, a catholic priest and
the Duke of Guise. The
death in 1584 of the Duke of Alençon (brother of the King) made Henri
de Navarre legitimate heir to the throne.
A new conflict followed, led by a league who refused to have a
non-Catholic king. Henri
was already master of Paris.
Henri III, conscious of the rivalry which the Duc de Guise posed,
helped his brother the king Louis XIII assassinate the
Duc. 1st
August 1899 Henri III unassailable position was recognised by Jacques
Clement the day after the mortal wounding of the last Valois and he was
declared the head of the house of Bourbon and direct descendent of Saint
Louis..
