Chateau de Chinon was built by Henri II who became the Plnntagenet King of England in 1154 and who ruled much of the Loire Valley from his Royal Residence in Chinon.. His son, Richard the Lionheart, lay in state in the town at the Maison des Etats Généraux (now the Musée du Vieux Chinon).
There are three castles separated by moats and enclosed by one long wall. Henry’s Fort St. Georges is the first through the entrance, then you enter the middle of the castle through the 14th century Tour de l’Horloge. All that remains of the west wall of the Logis Royale is the Great Hall. You can visit the wax works which depict scenes from life at that time.
