| Chinon is a wonderful old town with a string of narrow streets coarsing up
the hillside behind the river Vienne towards the
Chateau. Jeanne dArc arrived in Chinon on 6th March 1429 and began her transformation to warrior-saint; this event is marked by the statue to be found in the marketplace. |
|
||||
| There are wonderful views of the town and the river from the Chateau. |

French parliament whichmet in an upstairs room. The dauphin had summoned representatives of his kingdom to this room in 1428 to fund the war against the English. |
On display in the museum include the early larab tapestry Cope of Ste-Mexme and Eugène Delacroix portrait of Rabelais. | ||||
| Musée du Vin et de la Tonellerie | Open daily Apr. to Sept. 02.47.93.25.63 |
||||
| This museum houses models which demonstrate the stages of wine making and barrel making; you can taste the local red Cabernet Franc. Nearby are the troglodyte caves where the brotherhood of wine-growers hold their feasts; these caves inspired Rabelais description of the Temple of the Divine Bottle. |

| Maison Rouge - faced with red brick,
and Maison Bleue - faced with blue slates ,
both interesting restored mediaeval houses in an ancient street several layers back from
the river bank. Maison Rouge, 38-42 rue Voltaire, dates from the 14th and 25th centuries and is typical of the architecture in the town. |
